There are eight bear species in the world (polar, brown or
grizzly, American black, Asiatic black, sloth, sun, Andean
spectacled, and giant panda). Around the world, bears are culturally significant and sometimes even revered. North America supports three of those species (polar, brown or grizzly and black). One species of bear occurs in the Tahoe Basin (in both California and Nevada): the American black bear.
